Cybersecurity Myths You Shouldn’t Believe For Your Business

There’s no doubt that small business cybersecurity has flown into the public eye over recent years. Once upon a time, it was part of technical jargon that would never have been considered being used in the public domain. Now, anyone who reads the news is accustomed to it.

Unfortunately, there are still a lot of misconceptions about it. For the small business owner, this can be dangerous. This is the reason I have penned today’s post and we will now look at some of the biggest myths that blight cybersecurity and small businesses have.

It can also be true that some ways to secure your company from such threats can make your daily tasks, system responsiveness and internet speed slower. It’s recommended to test your internet speed regularly and track your network speed on an ongoing basis to ensure that your security measures aren’t hindering your operational activities.

Cybersecurity Myth #1 – Only major corporations are vulnerable to attack

Out of all of the myths that we will mull over, this is arguably the most dangerous. As one might expect, major corporations are the companies who dominate the headlines when it comes to Cyberattacks. However, smaller ones are probably more at risk, for the simple reason that they don’t have any endpoint security systems in place. In other words, they don’t tend to take as many precautions.

While some hackers will target organizations for the sheer publicity factor, some aren’t as egocentric. Ultimately, they will try and find any breach – and small businesses often have plenty for them to go at.

Cybersecurity Myth #2 – It’s all about your IT team

This next myth might raise a few eyebrows when you consider the fact that cybersecurity is such a technical niche.

However, while it certainly does breach topics that many of us just haven’t the faintest idea about, let’s talk about some of the less advanced things. One of these is the basic actions of employees.

For example, while your IT team can block the majority of dangerous emails and stop an impending DDOS attack, this is just the tip of the iceberg. They aren’t in a position to monitor employees day-in, day-out and prevent them from clicking on a bad link in an email, or even accidentally showing their password to someone on the train.

These occurrences are increasingly common and can have just as much impact on a business as some of the high-profile, highly technical cases.

Cybersecurity Myth #3 – Antivirus protection is all that matters

Finally, whether it’s amazing marketing on behalf of the antivirus companies or something else, we are not going to speculate. However, there is a big misconception that as long as your company has some antivirus software installed, everything is going to function just right.

Well, this isn’t the case. Sure, having adequate antivirus software installed is a big plus, but this isn’t everything. There are plenty of other avenues that you need to “block”, and let’s also not forget that antivirus software only scratches the surface as well. There will always be occasions where some viruses slip through the net and ultimately aren’t covered by the software. This is something that is often swept under the carpet, leaving many businesses to think that they are covered for everything no matter what.
