Jacob Gottlieb was born to Polish immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York. His mother was a pediatrician and his father an economics professor. He became interested in their fields early in his life and this guided his future. It became clear he had a talent for investing when he won a contest at school involving selecting stocks in the seventh grade. This was when his father provided him with an investment trading account of his own.

Mr. Gottlieb attended Brown University and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He then continued his education at NYU Medical School for his Doctor of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine internships prior to deciding to pursue a Wall Street career in finances.

Jacob Gottlieb began working for Sanford C. Bernstein & Company in 1998. He covered international healthcare as a buy-side analyst and remained with the business for a couple years. He eventually moved to the Merlin Biomed Group as a healthcare portfolio manager to advance his career. He did not stay with Merlin for long and went to work for BAM or Balyasny Asset Management.

He became one of the top earners and began building a reputation for large portfolio gains. He left BAM and established Visium in 2005. His most recent venture is Altium Capital. Jacob Gottlieb started the healthcare investment firm to advance therapies for numerous conditions and diseases such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes and cancer. He is also involved in philanthropy including Covenant House.

Covenant House has been protecting children since the 1970’s. They provide immediate crisis care, food and shelter for trafficked children, runaways and homeless youths. Covenant House offers a lot more than just basic support.

Their services include educational support, healthcare, legal services, drug abuse prevention and treatment programs, skills training programs, job readiness programs, street outreach, mental health services, transitional living programs, mother and child programs and aftercare. Covenant House us privately funded and making a difference in twenty United States cities as well as in Canada and Central America.

MFA or Math for America is another one of Jacob Gottlieb’s philanthropies. Jim Simons is the American billionaire, philanthropist, fund manager and mathematician who founded the organization in 2004. MFA provides graduates with skills in STEM or science, technology, education, and math. The organization was established using the $25 million donations from Jim Simons. This also provided fellowship training and higher salaries for the teachers.

The Robin Hood Foundation is also close to Jacob Gottlieb’s heart. The organization was founded in 1988 to help alleviate the main causes of poverty within New York City. The Robin Hood Foundation donated in excess of $129 million last year to organizations fighting poverty by providing youth and child development, support services, disaster relief, education, economic security, jobs and basic survival.

The staff leading the organization is diverse and includes attorneys, musicians, nonprofit leaders, chefs, government officials, yoga instructors, management experts, PhDs, journalists, and actors. Several councils and boards lead the foundation. The board members underwrite all administrative costs for the foundation.
