Plugging in your television isn’t as simple as it used to be. You have so many different options to choose from, including cable, satellite, streaming services, or antennas.

In this article, we’re going to focus on the differences between satellite vs cable to help you decide which one better fits your needs.

Keep reading below if you want to learn how they compare in price and reliability.

Satellite vs Cable: Which Has the Better Price?

In general terms, customers get a better deal with satellite TV but it all depends on what you want.

An average basic cable package is priced at about $30 per month. Satellite, on the other hand, starts at $45 and includes around 200 channels.

Prices will jump if you want premium channels or high-definition programming.

Cable companies also allow you to be on a month-to-month contract while satellite companies often require annual contracts. And don’t forget that satellite has a more intense installation process.

While satellite seems like the better option, don’t discount cable companies. They’re now offering special bundles that are turning the tables on satellite TV.

Wise Customers Are Now Choosing Antennas

Not interested in the bells and whistles? Just want to save money and have basic channels? Then antennas are your option!

There are two options here: digital and analog. Most homeowners are now updating to digital versus the old school rabbit ears.

Digital TV signals are still broadcast over VHF and UHF frequencies. This means you can pick up all of your favorite channels with a properly installed antenna.

It’s best to invest in hiring a professional installer to evaluate your property. They’ll determine what type of antenna works best and deal with any obstructions. Be sure to discover more about antenna installation.

A Breakdown of Cable vs Satellite Quality

Besides considering the price, what else worries you about cable TV vs satellite dish? You want to ensure that your service is clear and reliable.

The picture transmitted to your home is typically clearer with a satellite. Rather than traveling through miles of different wires, the satellite signal is delivered straight to your home.

Satellite users also have access to more channels around the world, but sometimes can struggle to get local stations. With traditional cable, you’re often stuck with east or west coast channels. Unless you’re willing to pay more.

Reliability is another concern. People using satellite dishes can experience outages during storms. Technology has come a long way since the 1980s but it still happens.

In terms of equipment, satellite dishes are smaller than ever and most companies will throw them in for free.

Are you a renter? You should probably check with management before attaching a dish to the side of your unit.
