Your achievement as an entrepreneur will depend on how you define success. Different entrepreneurs see it in different ways and measure success based on their unique experiences, values, and motives.

But your success is your vision. It is where you want to be in your life or your business after some time in the future. It defines the entrepreneurial path that you need to walk.

So, what is the success for you? How do you look at your success? When do you know that you have achieved success? These are important questions every person should ask and respond to.

You probably have a clear vision of your entrepreneurial path, but can you tell me in one sentence what you mean when you talk about it?

Success is a complex thing that can be composed of different elements when it comes to entrepreneurs and small-business owners.

📖 Key takeaways

  • How can you expect to achieve success if you do not clearly define success, and what exactly does it mean for you? So, it is important to start with defining success on a personal level.
  • It’s important to develop your own definition of success by reflecting on how others perceive it. However, there is no one right or wrong answer to defining success. Some will look at success as a fulfilling social life. Others will define success in another area.
  • Your own definition of success must be based on your own values, priorities, and vision. Then, you can easily set clear goals and work towards achieving goals. In such a way, you will achieve success.

What is the Success for You?

Start with this question and ask yourself what is success for you. You will probably immediately become confused. You will start asking additional questions because you can not simply respond to the question.

For example, you will probably ask about personal and business success, so now you will have two questions. Also, then you will say, but what are my goals? Your success, regardless of whether it is for your business or you and your family, in most cases, will present achieving those goals.

Usually, I use this question in my classes for entrepreneurship, and the first response is to be millionaires or successful entrepreneurs; my students quickly see that it is not so easy to define what success means for them. For example, we talk about academic success as a college student, family, entrepreneurial, business success, etc.

As you can see, it is not easy to define success because we can not look at it as a general thing. It is specific and is based on our action steps driven by our goals. On the other hand, our goals are driven by our values.

It’s important to recognize that success is not a universal concept but a unique and individualized definition that reflects your own values, goals, and priorities. When you define success, consider what truly matters to you, what brings you joy, and what makes you feel fulfilled.

To start defining success from your own perspective, ask yourself:

  • What are my core values and priorities?
  • What are my short-term and long-term goals?
  • What kind of person do I aspire to be?
  • What kind of life do I want to live?

Reflecting on these questions will help you better understand what success means to you. This personal definition will serve you as a guiding star, aligning your actions and decisions with your true aspirations.

The Importance of Authenticity

Authenticity is key when you define success and live a fulfilling life.

As I mentioned earlier, don’t copy someone else’s definition of success; focus on what matters to you. Success means something different to everyone. Simply being true to yourself and your values is the key to personal success.

Finding your unique definition of success prevents you from climbing the wrong ladder in life.

Being authentic in defining success means staying focused on your goals and clear of distractions. By defining it in line with your core values, you create your own personal definition that will guide you on your journey.

This approach ensures that your achievements resonate with your values, leading to a more meaningful and satisfying life.

Goals Achievement

Setting clear goals is a fundamental step in defining success.

As you know, goals will provide you with a clear direction, focus, and motivation. Without goals, you can not stay on track and work towards your desired outcomes. When you set goals, first look at your definition of success and ask yourself after you write the goal: is achieving this goal something that will bring you closer to already defined success for you?

Here’s why setting goals is essential:

  • It helps you clarify your priorities and focus on what’s truly important.
  • It provides a sense of direction and purpose, keeping you motivated and driven.
  • It allows you to track your progress and celebrate your achievements.
  • It fosters a growth mindset, encouraging you to embrace challenges and learn from failures.

By setting SMART goals, you create a structured roadmap for success, enabling you to make consistent progress toward your personal and professional objectives. So, reflect on what it means to you and set clear goals and priorities.

True Success is the Journey, Not the Destination

Success is not just about the destination but the journey itself. You feel a deep sense of pride, satisfaction, and fulfillment when you achieve something you’ve planned. This is what we call “true success.”

Let’s say you create a plan for financial stability that has steps like:

  • saving a certain amount of money each month,
  • investing in profitable opportunities and
  • being smart with your spending.

As you follow this plan and achieve your financial goals, you also achieve financial success, and in this journey, you build discipline, patience, and resilience along the way.

Similarly, when setting goals for personal growth or career advancement, having a clear plan can increase your chances of success.

As you can see, true success goes beyond financial or professional success; it also covers personal growth, making a positive impact, or having a healthy work-life balance. It’s about living a life that resonates with your values and priorities. It’s not a success if you lose some of these.

To achieve real success, focus on the following:

  • Set SMART goals that align with your own values and priorities.
  • Be growth-oriented, challenge yourself, and learn from failures.
  • Build positive relationships and a support network. You can’t do it alone.
  • Take care of yourself and have a work-life balance.

Personal Success and Goals Achievement

Many times, personal success means that you have achieved your personal and business goals.

It’s important to recognize that a successful person can be defined in many ways, from professional achievements to personal happiness and the positive impact one has on others’ lives.

Achievements of Something Planned

You, as an entrepreneur, plan different things. Whenever your plans become a reality, that’s success for you.

However, social media often showcases individuals living seemingly perfect lives, which can distort personal definitions of success.

  • What are your plans?
  • How can you achieve them?
  • What will you do after achieving them?

Achievements of Something Desired

You, as an entrepreneur, are a dreamer. You always desire something. Without desires, you will not start the business. When your desires become true, then you reach success.

Understanding the etymology and personal interpretations of the word success can shape your individual definition and perception of what constitutes a “good result” or a “happy outcome” based on how you define it and the goals you set.

So, if you want to succeed, it is important to clearly define your desires:

  • What are your desires?
  • Can you reach your desires?
  • How can you achieve your desires?
  • What will you do after achieving your desires?

Financial Success and Profitability

You and your business need profitability. Without profitability, you can’t grow your business. Without profitability, you can’t finance your business’s everyday operations. Part of your entrepreneurial success is also the profitability of your business.

  • What does profitability mean for you?
  • How can you be profitable?
  • What will profitability do for you?
  • What will you do after achieving profitability?

Overcome Obstacles

Having your own definition of success is not a guarantee of achieving your goals. You will have many ups and downs, challenges, and obstacles to overcome.

Don’t let obstacles or failures stop you; instead, see them as opportunities for growth and learning.

You must have a growth mindset and be open to all new challenges and experiences. So, surround yourself with people who support and motivate you on your journey. This will help you achieve your goals, your personal and professional success, and, ultimately, a happy life.
