How to Increase Commitment to Your Goals?

How to Increase Commitment to Your Goals

One of the keys to achieving your goals is to increase your commitment. When you commit to a goal, you focus on the actions needed to get there. Commitment increases commitment. It’s a simple formula that leads to success in life and business.

People are often afraid to commit themselves to a goal, even if they know that they should. If you want to get anything done, you must commit to doing it. You can’t just go to bed every night and wake up and expect to have accomplished something.

The way to build a life of accomplishment is to set goals and work towards accomplishing them.

In my experience, when it comes to accomplishing something, we all tend to procrastinate. But, here’s the good news: you don’t have to suffer the consequences of not doing anything. So, let’s go over some steps you can use to jump-start your momentum with a commitment to your goals and get things done faster. In this article, you’ll learn how to do just that.

Why is Commitment to Your Goals Important?

Everything that you are doing is connected in one way or another with your goals. Something that you want to reach. So, you will need to increase your commitment to your goals. Can you become more productive without the achievement of your goals?

For example, you want to reach something, and that something is to increase your own productivity. The first thing you will need to do is make this goal much clearer. It will need to be the SMART goal.

In our case, let’s say that you want to increase your productivity by 20%. What is the meaning of that?

Because productivity is work done in a specific period of time, your goal will be to increase productivity by 20% or do 20% more things in the same period of time compared with your previous work done in the same timeframe.

When you know what your goal is or what you want to reach, you will need specific tasks or actions. If you want to improve your productivity by 20%, you must implement those tasks into your everyday working routine. Probably, you will start the action list with something like this:

  • Analyze the current workload.
  • Analyze current work processes.
  • Find all possible bottlenecks.
  • Also, find solutions to eliminate bottlenecks.
  • Find possible improvements in the usual processes that you use.
  • Develop an implementation plan.
  • Implement solutions from the plan.

But, a good plan doesn’t mean that you will achieve your goal to improve productivity by 20%. If you don’t complete that action list, not only that you will not achieve your goal, but you won’t know if the actions that you plan will help in improving your productivity.

You will not start doing things until you really want to reach that goal. We can’t talk about productivity if you don’t start doing things. Productivity is highly connected with doing things.

✋ Warning

Here is how you can become more productive at work in this messy environment.

Because you must achieve your goals, they are not a subject that you can set and forget. You need to work or implement actions that will lead to that achievement. How can you increase your own efficiency in achieving the goals you set to achieve? The only answer to this question is a commitment to those goals.

If you are not obligated to achieve the goals, how can you expect to achieve them? You need to turn inspiration into action.

Want to know how to increase your commitment to achieving your goals? Here are the five simple steps to help you commit yourself to make your goals happen.

1. To increase your commitment, make your goals achievable

You can’t achieve unrealistic goals, and you can’t expect that you will commit to something that you know that’s hard to achieve. For example, if you set the goal as our previous example to increase productivity by 1000%, that will mean you want to accomplish ten times more work at the same time. This goal will be unrealistic. It’s much better to set 20% instead of 1000% and in an iterative way to try to increase your productivity first to 20%, with the next goal for another 20% and so on.

Goals that are too big or unachievable are counterproductive. There’s nothing worse than setting a goal that’s far out of reach because you know it will be very difficult to achieve.

The first step to increasing your commitment is knowing that you can easily achieve your goals. When you know that it is possible, you will focus on achieving them, working through each of your action steps.

By setting small but achievable goals, you make yourself more likely to reach them. So set yourself some realistic goals, then see where you end up. Once you’ve achieved your goal, set a new one.

2. Make your goals specific to increase commitment

Specificity is about setting clear and specific goals. Without clear and specific goals, it’s very difficult for people to commit to your desired actions and outcomes.

Specific goals will tell you what you need to do if you want to achieve them. Unspecific goals can be very confusing and will decrease your commitment.

You can increase your commitment to your goals by making your goals as specific as possible. The more specific you make your goal, the more likely you will be successful. Let’s say you want to increase productivity by 20%.

Increasing productivity as a goal is a really confusing and undetermined goal. If you don’t know what you need to achieve and when you need to achieve probably, you will not even try to achieve it.

Then make your goal specific by writing down what day you will reach that goal. For example, write down, I will increase productivity in the manufacturing department by 20% by the end of 2022. Now you have something you can hold onto, and work towards every single day.

3. Write your goals on a piece of paper if you want to increase your commitment

Writing down your goals is a powerful way of committing to them, especially if you can tie them to actions. When you see a goal on a piece of paper, you’re making it real. You can’t just tell yourself to do something; you have to commit to it.

Different scientific researchers have proven that if you put something on paper, a commitment to that something is much more significant. In his book Influence – The Psychology of Persuasion, Dr. Robert Cialdini gives an example from the Korean War. The Chinese soldiers in the camps where they held prisoners required them to write statements that communism was better than the US system. In such a way, they will increase commitment to their own statement, which they did not believe.

By the way, as an entrepreneur, you will need to be persuasive. In this great video, Robert Cialdini gives us the real secrets behind the science of persuasion.

If you write your goals on a paper, they will be in a category with more commitment than the goals that remain only in your head.

4. Present Publicly Your Goals to Increase Your Own Commitment

If you talk with only one person about your own goal, your commitment will be much higher than if you are the only person that knows about your goal.

Presenting your goals publicly – whether through blogs, social media, videos, websites, etc. – is a great way to demonstrate your commitment to something you care about.

When you share your goals publicly, you create an emotional connection. People tend to believe that they are more committed if they share their intentions with others.

You will want to be seen as a responsible person, even in the eyes of that one person with which you share your goals. If you say that you will do something, there is a higher probability that you will really do that.

Because of that, for your most important goals, it is best to be shared with the public.

5. Increase Commitment: Do You Know What You Need to Do?

If you know the activities you must implement in advance, you will increase your own commitment level. Therefore, list the activities once you have the goal on paper and have already talked with someone. In such a way, you will want to start as soon as possible.

Make a list of everything you need to do to achieve your goals. This is called making a plan. You should create a detailed plan of all the activities you have to do to meet your goals. Start on the day you decide to set the goals. If you don’t have a plan, you’ll never reach your goals. You will also feel more excited and motivated if you have a detailed plan.

Conclusion

In conclusion, when I say commitment, I mean taking action to make the goals happen. The more you do the goal, the more you can expect to see it materialize. This is why it’s important to commit to the goals and do whatever it takes to accomplish them. Commitment is one of the most important reasons why people succeed at reaching their goals. If you want to make the most of your goals, you have to show up and commit to them every day. In other words, you have to take action. That’s what I call “doing your best work.”

To improve your chances of success, you need to commit to your goals. If you don’t commit to your goals, nothing will drive you to action. You need a vision, a purpose, and a goal, but you also need a commitment to act on it.

If you follow these steps in setting and achieving your business goals, your commitment will be much higher, and your productivity will be much better. I wish you good luck in achieving your goals!
