Education innovation requires new methods and technologies or changes to improve learning outcomes. We want to equip students for a dynamic workplace with skills like creativity, adaptability, and resilience. However, when I look at most of the programs, these three areas are not covered as they must be today.
In the past decade or two, I have read so many news articles where employers talk about the skills gap. According to Gartner, 64% of managers believe their employees can’t keep up with new emerging skills requirements of today’s workplace. On the other side, 70% of employees say they haven’t even mastered the skills they need for their jobs today.
And I’m sure that’s true. When I was a student, I learned programming in the Fortran language, which was not used anymore. Simple, as educational systems are designed currently, students learn more about the past and not about the future. Logically, when they finish their formal education, there’s already a high level of skill gap.
So we must ensure that in education, advanced educational technology is implemented. This technology can help educators to improve their students’ outcomes and nurture soft skills.
Simple, I think this is really important in preparing students for the future.

EdTech is changing the education landscape, giving students new tools to succeed. Modern education technology gives real-time insights and personalized learning plans.
For example, LMS and online courses allow students to access course materials anytime, self-study, and better outcomes.
Universities are using EdTech to support better, using video conferencing and virtual classrooms to communicate and collaborate.
Student-centric technology like AI-powered platforms identify students who are struggling and alert advisors to step in with support, increased student engagement, and academic performance.
Also, technologies like augmented reality and virtual reality are being integrated into classrooms to give immersive learning experiences. These tools encourage critical thinking and problem solving, learning is more engaging and accessible.

Today, more important is for schools, regardless if we talk about primary schools, or higher education, to teach their students where to find information, check the validity of information, and how to use the specific information.

With the increasing adoption of digital technologies, educational institutions are transforming their traditional teaching methods to incorporate more digital tools and platforms. Modern technology, including learning management systems, is playing a crucial role in this transformation.
Digitalization in education is changing how teachers teach and students learn and interact with educational content.
With the rise of digital tools, educational institutions are converting traditional teaching methods into digital tools and platforms. I now teach students from all over the world, which was impossible in the past without the students’ physical presence. This shift to digitalization means students can access quality educational content anywhere, anytime, on any device.
Also, digitalization at a high level allows teachers to create personalized learning experiences for their students, which leads to better outcomes. Digital books can show instructors what students highlight, how much time is spent reading the material, what notes are made, whether critical thinking is included in their notes, etc. So, it’s a win-win.

On the other hand, game-based learning and collaboration are the two significant trends in education technology today. Using games, we can build competition, strategic thinking, developing strategies to win the game, communication between students, etc.
While there will always be a need for self-study (independent study), I think strong critical thinking and analytical skills, collaboration and communication among students who solve practical problems as a learning process are the key to how work is done today.

This is a computer-generated environment that a user can interact with using the virtual reality (VR) headset, which is like a pair of goggles. In schools and classrooms, this technology can be used when teaching.
Traditional learning has limits, and students learn at different paces. For example, if you’re teaching the history of Ancient Egypt, you are more likely to have bored and passive students. But when these same students have VR headsets, learning history is enjoyable.
Virtual reality will take you to Ancient Egypt at around 3150 BC. Therefore, history will be brought back to life, and acing that history test will be easy.

First, with the appearance of Open AI’s Chat GPT, Google’s Gemini, and other chat-based communication with AI, opened a discussion between teachers looking at first at this innovation that learners will use in cheating.
I have more liberal thinking about this. Why? Because even before the appearance of this innovation and availability for everyone, my thought was that we need to change our teaching principles from: “what was done by someone in the past” to how to find, evaluate, and use the information you already have online.
Yes, I am not accepting projects that are totally written by AI. However, if I see that the student has critically evaluated the information received by AI, checked the sources and given their own opinions about the subject, the student will pass the module I am teaching. I am looking at this as a learning process, the same as they open one book and read it to learn. So, AI gives them an effective support to achieve a faster learning process.
AI-powered chatbots are also being used to provide students with instant feedback and support inside or outside class time, which is improving student engagement and motivation.
4. Gamification
As I already mentioned this as a trend, still I want to put this technology in the list. Yes, you will be utilizing games to teach students a difficult concept or course. Gamification helps students engage more deeply with the material, making learning more effective and enjoyable. Today’s students are exposed to many various games, mostly used for entertainment. But what if these games can play a role in their education?
Understanding a math concept like algebra isn’t always easy for every student. Some struggle with it, which affects their grades. But by implementing gamification and using games to help students learn algebra concepts, letters and numbers won’t be causing them nightmares.
5. Social Networking
The first social networking technologies were created by students. There are different social networking sites, and young people are the majority of users. This is why schools and teachers are utilizing them to give out assignments, teach, and make announcements to students.
Teachers and educators also use these platforms or technology to answer questions from students. They are a good way to connect and bond with students and know their learning progress.
For example, when I see how my math teacher from the high school is suing YouTube to publish videos with lessons including solving math problems, I was amazed. So, it is not about the age, it is more if the teacher puts more efforts to give different learning options for their students.
6. Cloud Computing in Educational Technology
Cloud technology enables schools to make different educational materials accessible to students via their cloud system or server. The biggest advantage of this technology is that students don’t have to worry about carrying piles of books.
These books will be accessible to the cloud system to every student, and assignments too can be given to students here. You can even access lessons if you missed a class. Therefore, with an electronic device and internet access, students can start learning.
7. 3D Printing
3D printing has numerous applications in the world, including creating hands-on models for students to investigate and interact with. This innovative educational technology allows students to bring their ideas to life by designing and printing 3D models, fostering creativity and improving the whole process.
3D printing can create tangible models for subjects like biology, where students can print and examine detailed replicas of anatomical structures.
For engineering and design courses, they can prototype their projects and test and refine their designs before final production. This application encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as they must consider the functionality and feasibility of their designs.

Mainly used for security, it is making its way into our schools. School districts are increasingly adopting biometric technology to enhance security and streamline administrative processes. It identifies a person using his voice, eyes, fingerprints, and facial recognition. This is helpful to ensure the safety of students at school, and knowing who attends class or not.
It has lately been used in school libraries when borrowing books; therefore, it will identify who borrowed that history booklet. Also, this technology ensures the right person or learner does an exam, so a different person won’t sneak in to do a test or exam.
9. Instructional Technology and Personalized Learning
Instructional technology is vital in improving personalized learning by offering tailored educational experiences that cater to individual student needs.
Each new type of instructional technology should be evaluated carefully to ensure it improves the personal element of educators’ and instructors’ teaching processes. The key is to balance the use of technology with traditional learning methods to optimize student outcomes.
For example, learning management systems (LMS) such as Canvas or Anthology (previously Blackboard) are central to many educational institutions. They provide a platform for course materials, online courses, and student engagement.
Also, I don’t want to exclude Google Classroom, which we use at the university I teach. Inside the classroom you can do so many things that I think I’ve not done inside the traditional classroom.
Video conferencing tools like Google Meet can create virtual classrooms, enabling real-time interaction between teachers and students, which is essential for collaborative learning and adequate support.

Furthermore, each lecture can be recorded and transcribed with the help of AI (currently English only), which enables students to go back to see additional material that is impossible inside the traditional classroom. They can get support simultaneously, asking questions, discussing at the lectures, etc.
