A Guide to The Most Commonly Used Kinds of Air Cooling Unit

Under hot conditions, human beings desire air conditioning units in order to comfortably and safely work, sleep and stay active. It will come as no surprise then, to learn that there are many different kinds of air cooling solution that have been popularized as of late.

Here is a quick guide to some of the most commonly used kinds of air cooling unit.

Portable Industrial Units

Industrial portable air conditioning units are common in mechanic’s workshops and factories. They are designed for ‘spot cooling’ and are placed in areas where heat buildup is a major concern. In factories, for instance, portable air conditioning units are often placed next to machines that produce a great deal of heat in order to make working conditions more bearable for operators. The best portable air conditioning units use compressors, condensers and evaporators to remove heat from the environment and pump cold air back out through ducts.

Geothermal

Geothermal cooling systems work by harnessing the naturally cooler temperature of the ground beneath a building. A heat conducting liquid is circulated within a building before being looped underneath the ground, where the heat is dissipated. The liquid then loops back into the building and cools air flowing through ducts. This method of cooling is very quiet and relatively efficient.

Window

Window air conditioning units are common in high rise apartment blocks. Room temperature air is sucked into the unit and passed over refrigerant coils. It is then blown back into the room as cold air, with the excess heat flowing out of the window through a vent at the rear of the unit.

Central

Central air conditioning units use ducts to transfer cooled air around a building. These systems are common in large properties such as schools and offices. Cool air naturally increases in temperature as it travels round a system. The warmed air is then sucked back into the system via return ducts, passed over refrigerant coils, and recirculated. They are expensive to install but tend to be very cost effective once in service.

Ductless

Ductless air conditioning units are perfect for cooling single rooms. They gather and cool air within a small refrigerant section and then pass it through an exhaust tube outside the building. They are usually installed above doors, where they make the least intrusive aesthetic mark on a room.

Desk Or Ceiling Fan

Fans are by far the simplest and cheapest air cooling solutions around, but they are not suitable for large scale cooling. Modern fans operate using much the same principle as ancient handheld fans, which were first used as personal cooling devices around 3000 years ago according to the fan museum in the United Kingdom. The first electric fan was invented in the late Victorian period. The fans you might find on your office desk do not differ much from these industrial age devices. In many warm climates, ceiling fans are the primary source of cooling in homes.
